I am an American, married to a Persian husband, now a naturalized American citizen. We are wondering what the issues would be for me to travel to Iran and finally be able to meet his family. He has gone back now 3 times in the last few years, to do this he had to apply for a new Persian Passport and travel under that.

If I were a person with NO family connection, I understand I would have to get a visa by going on a tour this is fine, I would like a tour anyway, as none of his family would have the time to take me to all the historic sites. I could take my tour and then extend it by a week and visit his family. I am thinking about using only a reputable American tour company so they could help me out if need be.

He would be bringing our 18 year old daughter, who we understand has to get permission and an Iranian passport through and with him. She does have his last name, I use my own last name. We have been told by some family over there that as his wife I would have to apply for an Iranian Passport and convert to Islam. This concerns us because then I would be an Iranian national and subject to their laws. We were married in a Catholic church, not by an Imam. Is this true? Is my status different from that of a tourist because I am married to a man born there?

Tell me if this makes sense or if we are worrying about nothing. Or would they investigate me and somehow find out our relationship anyway? Some other idea? Sorry this is so long: I have searched the forum here and have not found anything else that is really comparable. Advice would be helpful. There are two ways to do it: Apply for a tourist visa through a well known Iranian or American tour company. There are several good one in the state that arrange tours to Iran , althought they would charge considerably higher than their iranian counterparts well to be honest they just pass you over to the a travel company in iran to handle your tour and pay them half of what they charge you for the tour!

As a tourist you have to be on a guided tour, meaning that you have to be on a pre designed itinerary and of course a guide that would be with you all the time. If you want to go with a bigger group then you have no control over your travel itinerary. So if the tour is for 10 days , then you have to be with the tour wherever it goes for that 10 days and at the end of the tour the tour company dosent like you to stay in iran any more. It is not because they dont like you any more, the reason is that the way they get government to issue your visa is so tricky Government or for that matter MFA holds that particular travel agency responsible for your safety , where you go , what you do So after that 10 days the travel agency dosent and can not let you stay in iran.

Now one way to get out of this dilemma is to hire a travel agency to design a tailor made private tour for you , which you would tell them how long you want to stay where , This way you can stay as long as you want with your housband's family and then take off to go see different places around the country. This option is good from one stand point , however it also implies that your tour would be much more expensive than being in a bigger group. If you are married to an iranian person , you are legally eligible to apply for travel to iran , under your husbands passport or the passport that Iran Interest section office in DC would issue for you.

This way you dont need to have a visa nor to be on any tour and also you complete freedom to go visit all over the country as an iranian individual. But here is the catch , you have to register your marriage by the iranian interest section in DC. That means that you have to "At least for few minutes" accept your husband's official religion to be legally married. It dosent matter if your husband is christian, Zoroastrian, jewish or muslim. There are some paperwork involved and then you are going to be eligible to ALMOST same rights that your husband has under Iranian laws, among them traveling freely to iran.

In any case, it would not be too bad of an idea to call up around and see what kind of information you can get. Iran Interest Section has some pretty helpful staff that can explain things much better that i did. Here is their website www. Best of luck and keep in touch, if you think there is any other question that i might be of any help. Hi Lyn, Excellent, informative, and useful hint by 'Persiantraveler'. Manteau, i think, is the French word for 'female jackets' or long coats!

If you dont wish to convert to Islam, your husband's religion, then you must sign up for a tour offered by an Iran-based travel agency - and NOT a so-called 'reputable' American company. I say so because American travel agencies are mostly nothing but intermediaries between you and their partner travel agencies in Iran. Meanwhile, he must present key documents such as a notarized copy of your US marriage certificate as well as his Iranian and her American birth certificates!

All in all, if you and your daughter get Iranian passports, then, among others, you can travel together and stay in Iran as long as you want. Otherwise, you would have to sign up for probably an expensive tour. I know a good travel agency if you are interested. I forgot to mention that you also can apply for family member visa.

That is a class of visa that is issued for the cases like yours, however you got to be aware that the changes for getting this class of visa is not that great , but it is worth the try any way! The pros and cons: They need to include a copy of their ID , a little bit about why they are inviting you and how long you are going to stay. I learned Farsi, because I wanted to. I learned Farsi by buying and reading a crazy amount of Persian books, reading the Persian newspaper, listening to Radio Iran, and asking an immense amount of questions to my spouse at the time, his family, and his friends. As well, for all of my annoying and repeatedly asked questions to them, they were loving enough to take the time out to respond, and I thank them for that. I used to go as far as cutting up the vocabulary section at the end of each chapter in a book. I had the best teacher ever , and I even kept her as a friend.
